Reading and Math Skills Instruction

[return to top of page]

Literacy Bitterroot provides FREE and confidential reading and math skills instruction for those wishing to improve their reading and/or math skills for personal, employment, or college entrance purposes. To enroll in our reading or math skills courses, the following steps need to be taken:

1. Attend an orientation explaining our reading and math skills instruction services. Orientations are conducted for potential students every Monday at 9 am at Literacy Bitterroot in conjunction with our GED orientation (see information below). The orientation is open to the public — no appointment is necessary, walk-ins are welcome.

2. Complete a comprehensive assessment test (called the TABE — Test of Adult Basic Education). The TABE is given to evaluate students' reading, math, and language levels. Testing generally lasts from about 9:30 am to 12:30 pm with a half hour given for lunch.

3. Finish the enrollment process with a personal interview. Once the testing is completed and the assessment is scored by computer, a personal interview is conducted with each student to discuss assessment test results and to select the most suitable Literacy Bitterroot class. Personal interviews are conducted between 12:30 - 1:30 or by appointment. Note: skills improvement classes are held in conjunction with Literacy Bitterroot's GED classes, see GED class schedule below for specific locations, days, and times.

Literacy Bitterroot is located in the Human Resource Council Building at 316 North Third Street, Suite 156 in Hamilton, Montana. All Literacy Bitterroot services are free of charge. Program participants must be at least 16 years of age and not currently enrolled in public school.
